Imagine This Scenario

You engage with a vehicle CCTV provider who promises top-tier cameras. During testing, the images are good. You decide to invest and install these cameras across your fleet to reduce risk and enhance investigations for insurance claims. After a while, you discover that the cameras stopped recording due to equipment failure. Unfortunately, this comes to light only after an accident, and the lost footage leaves you without the video evidence you need. When you reach out to the CCTV company for support, they inform you that regular daily checks are necessary to ensure camera functionality—a practically impossible task for a large fleet.

This common scenario highlights why many companies lose money due to poorly serviced connected camera systems. However, by asking these three essential questions, you can avoid 90% of common issues faced by businesses daily.

How Many Data Network Providers Can The Solution Use?

Many are unaware that CCTV cameras can be connected to multiple networks to prevent disconnection from the server where recordings are stored. If a provider cannot offer network connectivity, consider it a red flag for unstable or slow connectivity.

A provider working with only one network is less stable and at higher risk because the entire CCTV storage service depends on a single external factor. Downtime in the connection means no access to your recordings. Opt for providers who use worldwide multi-networking connectivity, allowing CCTV devices to switch between networks and maintain continuous recording.

Question to ask: How many 4G data network providers can the system utilise? The more providers they have the more stable and reliable the system will be.

Do I Have Restrictions on Accessing My Camera Footage?

Some providers record and store footage but restrict your access to it, for example only being able to download 10 seconds of footage at a time which is very time-consuming and frustrating.

Ensure you can view and extract recordings as needed. Additionally, inquire if there are any extra costs associated with this access or what happens if you reach your monthly data allowance for a vehicle. It’s unreasonable for a CCTV company to charge extra for unlimited access to recordings, as this should be included in the service you paid for.

Question to ask:

  • Are there any limitations on how much footage I can review or download at a time?
  • If I reach my monthly data allowance can I still access my footage and are there any additional charges?

Will the Company Notify and Support Me If My Cameras Stop Working?

While it may seem obvious, customer service is crucial in this industry. If your cameras stop working, you need to know immediately. Ask the following:

  • How does the company alert you if the cameras fail?
  • How soon will you be informed about any issues?
  • Do they actively monitor for faults themselves?

Your provider should offer constant support, ensuring the service you’re paying for is functioning correctly.

Conclusion

To avoid issues with disconnection and loss of recordings, ensure your CCTV provider offers multiple 4G data network connections, no restrictions to access your footage, and proactive support. While it might seem challenging to find such a provider, there are companies that meet these criteria.
